That statement seems obvious because every teams need their MVP. But the Warriors need Curry now more than ever if they want any chance of winning a title this season. As of right now, the Grizzlies are leading the series 2-1. Taking a quick look at his stat line against the Grizzlies you would think that he is playing like his usual MVP self because it matches his stats for the regular season. His uber-efficient shooting that got him his MVP trophy is what has drastically changed. As of right now, he is shooting 39.7% from the field compared to 48.7% during the regular season. He also missed his 17 of his last 21 3-pointers compared to his 44.3% 3-point shooting during the regular season.
At the beginning of the postseason, I pegged the Warriors as the team to win it all. After their sweep against Anthony Davis and company, and their 1st game demolishment of the Grizzlies, I thought I had it right. Yet here we are 2 games later, questioning the baby-faced assassin wondering if he still has that MVP magic in him. The Grizzlies have done a great job of making Curry less effective than he usually is.
For this series, whoever controls the pace, they control the series and as of right now, the Grizzlies are taking control. The Warriors are a team that lives and dies by the three and they play quickly. They have athleticism in Iguadola and Barnes, great shooting from the Splash Bros and Green, and great vision from Curry. With all those pieces, they can move the ball quickly to the next guy to score. The Grizzlies are the definition of ‘grit-n-grind’ and they are the closest team to being the 90s team. They are physical and have big bodies in Gasol and Randolph. They also have arguably the best perimeter defender in the league Allen. And at the helm of it all, they have a underrated, yet elite, guard Conley. If there is any team that can beat the Warriors it is the Grizzlies because their play style is the complete antithesis of the the Warriors. If the Warriors are gonna live up to expectations they set for themselves, they need Curry to be the baby-faced assassin.
