It has been discussed by many writers, owners & fans how & why these MLB players are getting such huge contracts. From players such as Miguel Cabrera, to young guns such as Rick Porcello, they are making bank whether they play well or not in these next couple of years. These players are good, but should they be making hundreds of millions of dollars throughout the next couple years? With some heavy research, I have found that they don't deserve all of this money.
Let's look at the obvious, Miguel Cabrera. In early 2014, Cabrera signed a contract extension with the Detroit Tigers roughly estimated at $248 million for 8 years. He already had $44 million to go on his remaining two year contract, so it was $292 million total. I understand that he can hit the ball over 400 feet about 30-40 times a year, but he is not worth all of that. Babe Ruth had an average salary of of $52,000 in 1922. I know things have changed with the economy and how baseball does things, but such a dramatic increase is absurd. The main reason I type this, is because I, as many people of the baseball world found out that RHP Rick Porcello signed a 4 year $82.5 million contract extension. Porcello is not the pitcher version of Miguel Cabrera & he is not worth the money. Porcello started in at least 30 games in 4 of his 6 seasons & has proved he can start, but can he perform. His lifetime ERA is 4.30, & the Red Sox are willing to fork over over $80 million for 4 years for that? Not such a class move Boston. All I'm saying is this: You can't give out this much money to one specific player. People such as Alex Gordon, Eric Hosmer, Madison Bumgarner & so on deserve more than they make. Maybe not the $100 million contracts that these people are getting, but maybe something around $50-$60 million. In conclusion, there should be a cap limit on how much you can spend on each player by position. I'll break it down here below. SP: $65 million RP: $40 million C: $25 million 1B: $20 million 2B: $25 million 3B: $30 million SS: $30 million OF: $45 million By James Trietley
