That is a question that Mavericks fans do not want to hear at all. We don’t want to even hear that question. As Mavericks fans, we believe that Dirk can play for the rest of his life hitting one-legged flamingo fadeaways and leading the Mavericks to victory. However, there comes a day when we must be realistic and that day is today. Has Dirk’s title window closed? No. Absolutely not. Can he still lead the Mavericks to a title? No. Unfortunately Dirk can not put a team on his back and lead them to the finals again. As these past 2 seasons proved, Dirk has taken a backseat and let Monta Ellis lead the Mavs in scoring.
Dirk is a once in a generation kind of player. There has never been and maybe there never will be a 7-footer that shoots as accurately as Dirk and is as loyal as Dirk. Dirk has stated that he is fine with coming off the bench as the 6th man. Dirk can still win a title, as long as he isn’t at the helm. That means that the Mavericks need to sign a superstar in the offseason to keep Dirk’s title hopes alive (*cough cough* Lamarcus Aldridge). However, the Mavericks haven’t been able to sign superstars these past few offseasons. It is also reported that Deandre Jordan is ‘extremely interested’ in joining the Mavericks this offseason. Financially, I’m not sure if this could work but hypothetically, imagine Aldridge and Jordan in the starting front court and Nowitzki and Chandler off the bench. That would easily be the best frontcourt rotation in the league.
It is still possible for Dirk to get another title. But the Mavericks need to sign/draft/trade for some talent to be the head honcho in Dallas and let him take a backseat.
