‘Hack-A-Shaq’. It is a phrase that was thrown around during Shaq’s playing days. The other team starts intentionally fouling Shaq to make him shoot free throws hoping knowing that he will miss at least 1 free throw. This is a strategy that many teams used whenever they played Shaq because they get to save their energy by resting while Shaq is shooting. That said energy can then be used on the other end when they have the ball and have a better chance to score a point. This strategy, although can be effective, is straight painful to watch. It is ruining the game of basketball and gives a good reason for fans of other sports to rip on basketball. As a basketball fan, this is unacceptable.
Deandre Jordan made history and set a postseason record Sunday night. He attempted 28 free throws in the first half and made only 10. This is ‘Hack-a-Shaq’ at its peak. It is just painful to watch this pathetic strategy and their is no clear way to fix this except one. GET BETTER AT SHOOTING FREE THROWS!!!! Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner, has stated that he plans to tweak the rules to make ‘Hack-a-Shaq’ “illegal” so to speak. That’s how bad this problem is. It is so bad that the commissioner of the league has the change rules to fix the problem. There is nothing that Adam Silver can do to fix the problem and please all sides. The only true way to fix this is to have the atrocious free throw shooters, specifically big men, to GET BETTER AT SHOOTING FREE THROWS.
