Since I was little, I have always loved to watch the NBA All-Star weekend special. Personally, I never really cared about the Friday night Celebrity All-Star game or the D-League All-Star game, which I didn't even know they had until a couple of years ago. Most of the hype surrounds the underdog Saturday night contests. The skills challenge, dunk contest, three-point shootout, and the shooting stars challenge. I do think that the Saturday night contests overshadow the actual all-star game with so much hype and media around the contests, specifically the dunk contest. There have been some memorable moments in the past, the Vince Carter dunks, little 5 foot 7 inch Spud Webb becoming the smallest NBA player to dunk, and many more that make the dunk contest what it is today. For the past couple of years, the dunk contest has let me down time and time again. Almost all of the possible dunks have been done, unless you want to add a prop to it along with a nice advertisement for a lucky company (Blake Griffin). They tried to bring some new excitement last year with the new format, but I thought that it was worse as many others did too.
I personally think they should have more stars in the dunk contest, but the begging for LeBron to be in it hasn’t gone as planned in the past years. I just don’t think that Antetokounmpo, Lavine, Plumlee, and Oladipo are the crème of the crop dunkers in the league today, much less known by many people who don’t watch the NBA regularly but watch all-star weekend. The only part of the all-star weekend that I pay attention to is the 3-point-shootout and the all-star game on Sunday night. With all-star weekend rolling around this weekend, there has to be a solution to making the dunk contest better or else everyone no one is going to want to participate in it.
